Combined Force Arrests Taliban Facilitator in Balkh Province

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 31, 2013 - A combined Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban facilitator in the Chimtal district of Afghanistan's Balkh province yesterday, military officials reported.

The facilitator handles movement of explosives and weapons for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also collects illegal taxes from civilians to pay for weapons and controls a cell responsible for numerous attacks in the area.

In other Afghanistan operations yesterday:

-- A combined force in Kandahar province's Khakrez district killed an enemy fighter during a search for a senior Taliban leader who directs and executes attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also teaches other insurgents how to make roadside bombs, distributes vests for suicide-bomb attacks, and coordinates the distribution of bombs, weapons and equipment for Taliban groups in the province.

-- In Logar province's Khoshi district, a combined force killed an enemy fighter during a search of a Haqqani network leader who coordinates and directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also controls several Haqqani groups in the area and has directed assassinations of local Afghans.

-- A combined force in Paktia province's Zurmat district wounded an enemy fighter during a search for a Haqqani network leader responsible for kidnappings for ransom and for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Combined Force Kills Taliban Leader in Nangarhar Province

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14, 2013 - A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed Taliban leader Haqiq in the Sherzad district of Afghanistan's Nangarhar province today, military officials reported.

After positively identifying a threat from armed insurgents, the combined force engaged, killing Haqiq and two additional insurgents.

Haqiq, also known as Sur Gul Lala, conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and extorted money from district villagers to fund Taliban activities. The security force also detained three suspected insurgents and seized a cache of weapons, gear and ammunition. No civilians were harmed during the operation, officials said.

In other Afghanistan operations today:

-- A combined force in Baghlan province's Baghlan-e Jadid district arrested a Taliban senior leader and another insurgent. The senior leader commanded insurgents operating in Jowzjan and Sar-e Pul provinces and was responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and Afghan civilians.

-- A combined force detained three insurgents in Kandahar province's Daman district during a search for a Taliban leader who oversees the acquisition and transfer of weapons and ammunition to insurgents. The security force also seized a large cache of ammunition.

In operations yesterday:

-- A combined force in Helmand province's Nad-e Ali district arrested a Taliban leader who transported and planted roadside bombs and armed insurgent fighters in the district. The security force also detained two suspected insurgents.

-- In Baghlan province's Baghlan-e Jadid district, a combined force detained two suspected insurgents during a search for a Taliban leader who controls fighters responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

-- A combined force detained two suspected insurgents in Nangarhar province's Khugyani district during a search for a Taliban leader who provides weapons to Taliban fighters. The security force seized bomb-making materials, weapons and ammunition.

Airstrike Kills Insurgent Transporting Weapons

KABUL, Afghanistan , Sept. 13, 2012 - A precision airstrike in the Mota Khan district of Afghanistan's Paktika province yesterday killed an armed insurgent transporting weapons, military officials reported.

An Afghan and coalition security force identified the insurgent transporting weapons, including a heavy machine gun, toward a populated area, officials said, and ordered the strike after ensuring no civilians were nearby.

A post-strike assessment determined no civilian property was damaged and no civilians were harmed, officials said.

In an operation today, a combined force in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province detained several suspected insurgents during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader suspected of commanding dozens of insurgents and directing them in attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces. The security force also seized and destroyed a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, several RPGs and ammunition for assault rifles and heavy machine guns.

Also today, coalition forces confirmed they killed Taliban insurgent leader Maulawi Matin in Helmand province's Marjah district in a Sept. 11 airstrike. He is believed to have led a large cell of fighters and was involved in the facilitation of weapons, ammunition and bomb components throughout Helmand. He also had links to other key insurgent leaders in the region, operating as a liaison with higher-level Taliban leadership based in Pakistan, officials said.

Officials also confirmed today that Afghan and coalition security forces in the Pul-e Alam district of Logar

In an operation yesterday, Afghan special police from the provincial response company in Wardak province found and destroyed munitions, bomb-making materials and other insurgent equipment during a search with coalition advisors in the province's Shahr district. The search yielded artillery rounds, rocket-propelled grenades, rockets, mortar rounds, fragmentation grenades, improvised explosive devices and a large amount of shrapnel for use in roadside bombs. The special police also found Afghan national security forces uniforms and cell phones.

OVER TWO TONS OF BOMB INGREDIENTS SEIZED IN AFGHANISTAN

Combined Force Seizes Explosives Cache

WASHINGTON, April 9, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force seized more than 2 tons of a roadside-bomb ingredient and detained several suspected insurgents in the Zurmat district of Afghanistan's Paktia province yesterday, military officials reported.

The security force found about 4,650 pounds of ammonium nitrate -- a fertilizer banned by the Afghan government because it can be used to make expolosives – as well as other bomb-making components, officials said.

In other Afghanistan operations yesterday:
-- A combined force seized about 2,200 pounds of opium and detained two suspects in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province.

-- In Helmand's Marjah district, a coalition force seized about 640 pounds of opium.
-- Combined forces captured 10 suspects and seized nearly 5,000 pounds of materials used to make bombs during separate operations in eastern Afghanistan.
-- A combined force captured a Haqqani network facilitator in the Pul-e Alam district of Logar province.

-- In the Pashtun Kot district of Faryab province, a combined force detained two insurgents and seized assault rifles, a grenade and bomb-making components while searching for a Taliban leader.

-- In Paktia's Zurmat district, a combined force detained two suspects while searching for a Taliban leader.
In April 7 operations:
-- In the Warduj district of Badakhshan province, a combined force called in an airstrike that killed Shamsuddin, a senior Taliban leader. Shamsuddin was associated with multiple recent insurgent attacks in Warduj, including an April 2 attack on an Afghan National Police checkpoint in which three policemen were killed and 11 were captured. In December, Shamsuddin directed an attack against Aq Shirah village that left four Afghan policemen dead.

-- Combined forces killed nine insurgents and captured six others during separate operations in eastern Afghanistan.

-- A combined force captured an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator, killed several other insurgents, detained another suspect and destroyed assault rifles and bomb-making materials in the Almar district of Faryab province. The facilitator provided funds for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
-- A coalition force found 15 mortars, two rocket-propelled grenades and several rockets in the Shindand district of Herat province.

-- A combined force detained multiple suspects while searching for a Taliban leader in the Zharay district of Kandahar province. The leader directs roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the Zharay and Panjwai districts.

-- An Afghan-led and coalition-supported force detained several suspects and destroyed weapons and grenades during a search for a Haqqani leader in the Khost district of Khost province. The leader conducts roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

In other news, combined forces killed three insurgents and captured five others during separate April 6 operations in eastern Afghanistan.

And, earlier in the week, a combined force killed Osmani Sahib, a senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader, in the Almar district of Faryab province. Osmani was recently promoted to replace Makhdum Nusrat as the highest-ranking IMU insurgent in Afghanistan after Makhdum was killed. The security force also captured two suspects and destroyed assault rifles and bomb-making materials.

Combined Force Captures 2 Haqqani Leaders

KABUL, Afghanistan, March 12, 2012 - An Afghan and coalition security force captured two Haqqani network leaders and five additional suspected insurgents during a March 10 operation in the Pul-e Alam district of Afghanistan's Logar province, military officials reported.

One leader oversaw the construction of roadside bombs and the other directed the emplacement of those bombs for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, officials said.

The two Haqqani leaders also are suspected in plotting the assassination of an Afghan army division commander.
The security force also seized a suicide vest, bomb-making materials and mortar rounds during the operation.
In other March 10 Afghanistan operations:
-- A combined force captured a Taliban facilitator and detained two suspects in the Kunduz district of Kunduz province. The Taliban facilitator provided weapons and supplies to insurgents operating in Khanabad district. The captured facilitator also is suspected in a plot to conduct a prison break to free an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan terrorist.

-- In a separate operation in the same district, a combined force captured a Taliban leader and detained another suspect. The leader coordinated roadside-bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition troops and is suspected in planning suicide attacks.
-- A combined force captured a Taliban leader and detained another suspect in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province. The leader directed attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces.
-- A combined patrol found an assault rifle, 800 rounds of small-arms ammunition, 132 pounds of homemade explosives and bomb-making components in the Tarin Kot district of Uruzgan province.
-- A combined force detained five suspects while searching for a Taliban leader in the Gelan district of Ghazni province. The leader directs roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces along Highway 1.
In a March 9 operation, a combined force found 10,890 pounds of explosive materials in Ghazni's Ghazni district.
